    CURRICULUM

     SSDF invites dancers ages 2 1/2 years and up; youth and adult. Dancers may be enrolled for a specific level class for more than 1 year; dependent on experience and age. 

    Creative Movement (Funky Tots) (age 3-5): Designed to introduce the preschool child to the world of dance and movement. Explorations of dance concepts help to develop each child’s creativity. A variety of music will be used. The atmosphere encourages cooperation and a positive self-image.

     Pre-Ballet/Tap (Kinder-Dance) (age 3-5): Introduces the basic ballet positions and preparatory steps. Focuses more attention on musicality, phrasing, terminology, and ballet etiquette in a positive and encouraging environment.

    Ballet (age 7+): Focus on physical and intellectual understanding of how and why each movement should be executed. Strength, flexibility, grace, balance, poise and musicality will be developed along with and understanding of the principles of ballet technique. 

    Hip Hop (age 8+): Talk about fast-paced! This high energy class with a combination of street style moves, isolations, floor work, keeps you upbeat. 

    Jazz (age 7+): High energy class includes warm-ups, stretches, center work and across the floor progressions. Proper alignment, balance, and technique is taught in a fun and encouraging environment. Dance combinations end each class. 

    Lyrical (age 8+): Fusion of ballet and jazz dance techniques. Dancers use motion to interpret music and express emotion. A lyrical dancer’s movements attempt to show the meaning of the music. 

    Modern/Contemporary Dance (age 12+): Distinct method of training emphasizing rhythm, design, shape and motion in space through organic movement.

     Pop Dance (age 6-8): Designed to introduce jazz and hip hop to youth. Begin development of combinations, including floor work. Energy-filled! 

    Tap (age 7+): Emphasis is placed on coordination, clarity, rhythm, timing and phrasing. This class develops elements of individual style and vocabulary. 

    Teen/Adult Jazz/Hip Hop (age 18+): It’s never too late to begin dancing. SSDF’s Jazz Program is a great point of entry for teen and adult dancers. Develop strength, flexibility, coordination and rhythm. Each class begins with a floor warm-up followed by combinations and routine development on jazz/hip hop dance fundamentals. 

    Theatrical Workshops: Focus on the actor, singer, and dancer. Builds stronger skills. Students will have fun developing a show or informance on a subject of interest including musical reviews. 

    Voice & Drama: Provide private and group classroom lessons. Develop the voice (singing - thru pitch, tonality) and drama (acting) techniques of a student.
